Theplanetsofoursolarsystemareanothersourceofwonder.Thefourclosesttothesunareterrestrialplanets,withsolidsurfacesandrelativelysmallsizes.Incontrast,theouterplanetsaregiantsmademostlyofgasandice.Jupiter,forexample,isover300timesasmassiveasEarth.Theseplanetsarealsosurroundedbymanymoons,eachwithitsownuniquefeatures.
Recentdiscoverieshaverevealedthatotherstarsystems,orexoplanets,arealsoabundantinourgalaxy.Someofthesehaveevenbeenfoundinthehabitablezone,wheretemperaturesarejustrightforliquidwaterandpossiblelife.
GalaxiesandBlackHoles
Atanevenlargerscale,galaxiesareclustersofbillionsofstarsthatareboundtogetherbygravity.TheMilkyWay,ourhomegalaxy,isabarredspiralgalaxythatcontainsupto400billionstars.Yet,theuniversecontainscountlessothergalaxies,rangingfromtinydwarfgalaxiestomassiveellipticalgalaxies.
Inthecenterofmanygalaxiesisasupermassiveblackhole,anobjectwithsuchstronggravitationalforcethatevenlightcannotescapeit.Theseblackholesareformedwhenmassivestarsrunoutoffuelandcollapseundertheirowngravity.Theycangobbleupnearbystars,gas,anddust,andsometimesemitenormousjetsofenergythatcanbeseenfromafar.
